Public Image Limited, Provinnssi Rock Festival, Finland, 6th June 1992

This soundboard recording, often known as 'Rotten To The Core' is from 1992, when PiL were promoting their last album to date 'That What Is Not.' It's not clear whether this is the whole set. John Lydon disbanded the group in 1993 when Virgin records refused to pay for the tour supporting the album, leaving Lydon to pay for it himself. Lydon has recently put together an incarnation of Public Image Limited for a few dates, and this show is presented to mark those gigs.

Them Crooked Vultures, Palladium, Cologne, Germany, 8th December 2009

2009's biggest supergroup (Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones) captured live for German TV, playing the whole of their debut album (many of the songs in greatly-extended form), plus non-album track 'Highway One.' It's all closer to 'Songs For the Deaf'-era QOTSA than the Foos or Led Zep, but that's no bad thing. Perfect sound quality, too.

The Darkness, Lowlands Festival, Holland, August 2004

Superb FM radio broadcast. The three-day Lowlands Festival was held over the 20th-22nd of August that year: I don't know which day The Darkness played, but from the on-stage comments, they seem to be in a tent, presumably the second stage, quite possibly as headliners as they were at their commercial peak at this point.

The Jam, Reading Festival, Reading, UK, 25th August 1978

Average-sounding recording, almost certainly taken from a radio broadcast (though the source of that is unknown). There's a lot of tape-hiss, but it's worth hearing for historical interest (this was The Jam's only appearance at the Reading Festival).

Danielle Dax, Astoria, London, UK, 30th August 1991

Very good audience recording, made when Danielle looked like achieving some proper commercial success with what was to be her last complete album to date 'Blast the Human Flower' from which most of this set is taken. The original tape was a bit muffled, with little top-end, but some work on the levels has made this much crisper and more listenable. Danielle Dax live shows are pretty thin on the ground, and this is one of the better ones.

Foo Fighters, Lowlands Festival, Holland, 21st August 2005

Excellent FM radio broadcast made while the Foos were doing the festival circuit in Europe. A week later, they played basically the same hit-heavy set at the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals in the UK. Note: The meta-data on the tracks gives the wrong date for the show - the 21st August is correct.

Nirvana, Reading Festival, Reading, UK, 23rd August 1991

Very good audience recording. This was the first of Nirvana's two appearances at The Reading Festival, a few months before the release of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and 'Nevermind.' Being at that point still just another band on the emerging grunge scene, they weren't a big draw and were a lowly sixth on the bill on the Friday, below Chapterhouse and above Silverfish. The following year, of course, they would close the festival in what was to be their final appearance in the UK.

Frank Black, The Borderline, London, England, 11th February 1990

There has long been some dispute about the date and location of this recording, with some parties claiming it was recorded in either Europe or the USA in 1990; others that it was taped in the USA in 1992, after the Pixies split. Certainly, Frank Black embarked on a solo tour after the break-up, travelling in his own car and playing small venues, such as bars and clubs, but nothing in the set-list is from the Pixies' 1991 final album 'Trompe le Monde' which supports the argument for the recording dating from 1990. Crucially, however, you can hear some audience chatter between songs - and they're English (not American) voices, pinning the recording to a one-off solo show at The Borderline on 11th February 1990. It's a superb show, generally regarded as an audience recording, but equally it may well be an unmixed soundboard tape, as there's no evidence of anyone talking or clapping close to the microphone (the voices occasionally heard could well be picked up by a stage microphone in a small club) - and it's crystal clear throughout. It's a highly recommended document of Pixies songs sung by Frank with just an electric guitar for accompaniment.
