All About Eve, Reading Festival, UK, 28th August 1987

The Icicle Works, Reading Festival, UK, 28th August 1987

Good quality audience recording. The Icicle Works were the filling in a strange line-up sandwich: preceded by Fields of the Nephilm, and followed by The Fall (both those sets on earlier posts here).

Fields of the Nephilim, Reading Festival, 26th August 1988

Very good quality audience recording of Fields of the Nephilim playing third on the bill (beneath Ramones, and headliner Iggy Pop) on the only good day at what was probably the worst overall bill Reading had ever seen - the other headliners were Starship on the Saturday and Squeeze on the Sunday. We were also treated to Bonnie Tyler, Meatloaf, Uriah Heep, Hothouse Flowers and Deacon Blue that weekend. I spent a lot of it getting drunk in the campsite. The Nephs, however, put in a pretty good show, despite having to play in daylight (not their natural environment at all). They even played an encore. Just don't expect loads of banter and jokes between songs... not really their style.

01 Endemoniada
02 Trees Come Down
03 Moonchild
04 The Watchman
05 Love Under Will
06 Phobia
07 Preacher Man
08 Last Exit for the Lost

The Cult, Exeter University, Exeter, UK, 28th October 1985

Soundboard recording of The Cult in Exeter on the Love tour of 1985. It's several generations removed from the original tape, I'd say, but still very listenable. Bought it at a record fair in Exeter some time in 1986 - it was nice to hear the whole gig, as I'd had to leave to get the last train back to Plymouth where I was living at the time and missed everything after 'She Sells Sanctuary.'

The Mission, Reading Festival, UK, 22nd August 1986

Good quality soundboard recording of a fairly early Mission show. They'd released just two singles at this point and played late afternoon at the festival. At one point, a rather drunk Wayne Hussey, rolling around the stage, fell off into the photographers' pit. A year later they were big enough to headline Reading - and again in 1989. The tape is probably a few generations removed from the original source, but still sounds good.

Public Image Limited, Brixton Academy, London, UK, 27th May 1986

Good quality audience recording of PiL during their commercially-successful mid-1980s phase, which means a slicker sound than before, in keeping with the prevailing trends. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but I'm not so sure now... Lydon gets extremely annoyed at the repeated spitting during this show (can't blame him, really) and eventually walks off during 'Public Image', repeatedly stating that he'll never play London again. He has, of course, and will be this December when he reconvenes a version of PiL for a short UK tour.

Danko Jones, Lowlands Festival, Holland, 25th August 2002

Excellent FM radio broadcast of Canada's Danko Jones at arguably the peak of his powers, when he was still playing many of his early songs (Mango Kid, Samuel Sin etc) and before his sound became more homogenised hard rock - though he was back on form when supporting Motorhead in the UK in 2008.

The Cramps, Reading Festival, UK, 24th August 1990

Good quality audience recording, though there's no guitar at the start - this was due to PA problems on the day. Even when the PA was sorted after a few minutes, it was never turned up very loud, but the sound on this is pretty clear overall.

Half Man Half Biscuit, Reading Festival, UK, 24th August 1990

Good quality audience recording, rescued from a CD-R that's starting to degrade - it took five attempts to get it recorded without clicks and crackles, though you will hear some faintly on track 10. But Half Man Half Biscuit bootlegs are pretty rare, so it's still well worth hearing. I was at the 1990 festival, but some how managed to miss seeing this set by the Biccies... still can't believe it.

Sex Pistols, 100 Club, London, 20th September 1976

So, for the 100th post here, what could be more appropriate than one of the most important gigs ever: the Sex Pistols last appearance at the legendary 100 Club in London. It's an average audience recording, but its historical importance outweighs any sonic deficiencies, I reckon. Following this gig, the whole punk scene exploded. 'Stepping Stone' and 'Satellite' are taken from the earlier 31st August 100 Club gig as there seems to be no recording if those from 20th September. 'Don't give me no Lip, Child' is cut slightly at the end - tape flip problems, perhaps, and the second version of 'Anarchy' cuts out, presumably when the tape ran out.

The Fall, WOMAD Festival, Mersea Island, Essex, UK, 19th July 1985

Excellent quality FM radio broadcast of The Fall playing (bizarrely) the WOMAD (World Of Music And Dance) Festival - generally known for its world music performers. Quite how The Fall came to be on the bill - or how they were received by an audience more used to acts such as The Bhundu Boys - I can't imagine. Track 10 does, however, have some tape 'flutter' but this doesn't detract too much from the set as a whole.

The Fall, 93 Feet East, Brick Lane, London, 12th September 2006

Very good audience recording made shortly after The Fall had played some of the major UK summer festivals. I saw them at the Reading Festival a couple of weeks before this and it was probably the best Fall show I've been to so far. A vintage year for the band - and this is a superb document of it.

Frank Black, Reading Festival, UK, 26th August 1994

Superb FM radio broadcast of the then ex-Pixies frontman on the main stage at the Reading Festival. I was there and it was a fantastic performance - at least once I'd found the 'sweet spot' for the sound, which was being blown about all over the place by the wind until I got into the centre of the crowd. The final track is an acoustic version recorded backstage at the festival for a US radio station.

The Fall, Reading Festival, 28th August 1987

Although the sound is generally average on this recording, it is possibly one of the largest gigs the band ever played - second on the bill at the Reading Festival. They were originally third, but Spear of Destiny pulled out, leaving The Fall playing immediately before headliners The Mission. This period was the band's commercial peak, and the set is largely comprised of songs from 'The Frenz Experiment' and singles of that period.

The Fall, Finsbury Park, London, 27th July 1986

This recording is of The Fall as support (bizarrely) to The Damned at the latter's '10th Anniversary Tea Party' gigs in London's Finsbury Park. Quite how The Fall got picked for as support is a mystery, but I love The Damned and The Fall, so it was a real treat for me, made even sweeter by the fact that New Model Army were also on the bill. Anyway, the recording: this is a very good audience tape. I can't imagine where the taper stood as there's almost no crowd intrusion and all the instruments are clear and well-balanced. The set sees The Fall playing almost all of their then current 'Bend Sinister' album.

01 Intro
02 Cruiser's Creek
03 Hot Aftershave Bop
