The Fall,
Keystone, Berkeley, California, USA, 10th July 1981

Very good recording of The Fall playing in California a few months after the release of their acclaimed mini-album "Slates," from which come three songs here, as well as earlier tracks from debut "Live at the Witch Trials" and third album "Grotesque." Also included is the single-only release "Totally Wired" and then-forthcoming single "Lie Dream of a Casino Soul" and "Hip Priest" which would appear on 1982's classic "Hex Enduction Hour" album.

The Rezillos,
100 Club, London, UK, 30th March 2006

Excellent digital radio broadcast. The Rezillos were part of BBC 6Music's 25th anniversary of punk celebration at London's legendary 100 Club. This set includes four then-new songs which, apart from the digital-download release "No 1 Boy," have yet to see the light of day. With original guitarist Jo Callis having left the band, who knows if the mooted album will ever appear.

New Model Army,
Finsbury Park, London, UK, 27th July 1986

Good quality recording of New Model Army supporting The Damned at second of two nights celebrating the latter's 10th anniversary. This is a transfer from a cassette bought in 1986 - probably the same recording that is available elsewhere, but perhaps one tape generation or so earlier… it sounds very slightly clearer than the other version. Possibly…

Foo Fighters,

Excellent digital radio broadcast featuring songs from the Foo Fighters' eponymous debut and second album "The Colour and the Shape" as well as a cover of Killing Joke's "Requiem" and, just before "This is a Call" a brief attempt at The Pixies' "Cactus." There's a short station ident during the intro of "Requiem" which was too tricky to remove and "I'll Stick Around" fades out after two minutes.

PJ Harvey,
Big Day Out, Melbourne, Australia, 29th January 2001

Excellent digital radio broadcast featuring muscular versions of eight songs from Polly Jean's 2000 release "Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea" plus a couple from 1992's "Rid of Me" and one from 1994's "To Bring You My love. Aussie station Triple-J has an annoying habit of putting loads of station idents in the broadcasts, and where possible these have been removed - there are slight changes in the level of crowd noise where these have been deleted, but where the ident went over the start of "This Wicked Tongue" I have had to leave it in.

Fleet Foxes,
BBC Radio Theatre, London, UK, 3rd June 2011

Excellent digital radio broadcast. Fleet Foxes were touring to promote second album 'Helplessness Blues' and this show includes songs from that and their self-titled debut release. 'The Shrine/An Argument' and 'Blue Spotted Tail' were broadcast a few days later on a different show, but I have spliced them into the correct positions in the set to make a more complete show (the band would have performed another four or five songs looking at set-lists from shows around this date).

The Charlatans,
Reading Festival, UK, 29th August 1992

Very good recording, probably made from the audience, as the bass is a little more prominent than a soundboard recording and there's (faint) traces of voices and (again, faint) phasing of the sound. The Charlatans were second on the bill on the Friday night, appearing before headliners The Wonderstuff.

The Darkness,
Rockpalast, Germany, 3rd July 2004

Perfect quality recording. No idea where I got this one from, but it was marked as 'soundboard,' though I suspect it's from a TV broadcast. Anyway, the band are in truly exceptional form - as you might expect after two years of near-constant touring. This recording is presented to celebrate the fact that I have just ordered tickets to see The Darkness at Download.

New York Dolls,
Reading Festival, Reading, UK, 28th August 2004

Perfect soundboard recording. New York Dolls had reformed after 29 years to play the Meltdown Festival on 11th June 2004 at the request of festival curator and long-time fan of the Dolls, Morrissey. Sadly, the reunion of the three surviving original members was short-lived as bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane died from Leukemia a month later on 13th July. This show took place just six weeks later with ex-Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffa in the line-up, a position he filled until 2010. This stunning set was available for a short while as a paid-for digital (Windows Media) download, but as it's been unavailable for years, it seems only fair to make it available once again.

Primal Scream
Olympia, London, UK, November 2010

Excellent digital radio broadcast. This show was recorded on either the 26th or 27th of November 2010 and sees Primal Scream performing the whole of their classic 1991 "Screamadelica" album. This is an upgrade to an earlier post, which was from a broadcast that didn't include "I'm Comin' Down" or "Higher Than the Sun" and which was also incorrectly dated. The final two songs have been taken from the earlier broadcast, as the BBC saw fit to edit them to shorter durations for the re-broadcast and I thought you'd prefer to have the full-length versions as originally performed.

Excellent digital radio broadcast. The precise date is unknown but, given that five of the song's are from 1978's "Outlandos d'Amour" LP, I suspect this is early in 1979.

The Darkness,
T in the Park, Kinross, Scotland, 13th July 2003 and 10th July 2004

Excellent FM radio broadcasts from Scotland's T in the Park festival. In the first, The Darkness were the opening act on the main stage on the Sunday. In the second, just a year later, they were headlining after David Bowie was forced to pull out due to illness, and turn in a blistering performance, which I didn't know I had until sorting through some un-labelled MiniDiscs!

The Darkness,
University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, 13th October 2003

Excellent FM radio broadcast. The Darkness were on their first major tour and on the verge of huge success. In August 2003 they had played the Reading Festival, being moved up from the second stage to the main stage as it became apparent to the organisers that they would be one of the weekend's biggest attractions (and they were). The following year they were big enough to headline the festival. This show features five songs from debut album "Permission to Land" as well as four b-sides and their cover of Radiohead's "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" and is posted to mark the significant rumours of the band re-forming.

The Skids,
Chelsea College, London, UK, 1981

Excellent digital radio broadcast made for the BBC's 'Rock Goes To College' programme. This recording was probably made sometime between the release of the band's third album "The Absolute Game" and the fourth, "Joy." "An Incident in Algiers" appeared on the bonus album "Strength Through Joy" which came with initial copies of the third LP. This show did not appear on The Skids' live CD which came out a few years ago.

The White Stripes,

Excellent FM radio broadcast. This was the White Stripes' first appearance at Reading, playing the main stage late on the Friday afternoon. This was the early days of White Stripes mania and they would return to Reading as headliners just two years later. This post of 2002's incendiary performance (sadly, the BBC broadcast omits a couple of songs from the set) is posted to mark the duo's decision to break up the band.

Excellent recordings from a TV broadcast (Woodstock) and FM radio (Reading Festival). Good quality audience recording. The band were touring their "Meninblack" album at this point. I don't know if this is the full show (it's only 51 minutes long). "Nuclear Device" fades out as though the taper was recording on a C90 and had to flip the tape during the song.

The Stranglers,
Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 19th August 1980

Excellent FM radio broadcast which was a simultaneous transmission with the "Rockstage" TV appearance. This show was mid-way between "the Raven" and "The Meninblack" albums and includes what was probably a fairly early outing of "Thrown Away" which was the first single from the latter.

Good quality audience recording of The Stranglers touring "The Raven" in late 1979. the taper appears to have flipped the tape during "The Raven" - and taken some time about it, too, as approx four minutes of the song are missing.

You can buy the new Subs' album (and some of their earlier works) from www.captainoi.com.

Alex Chilton,
WLYX FM, Memphis, USA, 1975

Good quality (though a bit hissy) FM radio broadcast. This is a pretty shambolic performance by an obviously-inebriated Chilton, performing his own songs and some covers: "Femme Fatale" is a Velvet Underground cover, "Death Cab for Cutie" was by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and "I Will Always Love You" a Dolly Parton song.
