Sex Pistols, Longhorn Ballroom, Dallas, Texas, USA, 10th January 1978

This appears to be an audience recording - it's certainly the full show, unlike the DVD release of this gig, which had just nine songs. The last track is a period radio ad for the gig. This is the last post of the US tour gigs - no recording has ever surfaced of the 12th January show at Cain's Ballroom, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the final concert on at The Winterland, San Francisco on 14th January is commercially available.

Sex Pistols, Kingfish Club, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA, 9th January 1978

Surprisingly good audience recording. I think there's more than one source of this show - I also have a pretty ropy version as well. But this recording is very clear and very listenable.

Sex Pistols, Randy's Rodeo, San Antonio, Texas, USA, 8th January 1978

Seemingly the hardest gig to find from the US tour of 1978, I've only ever had this as these 128kbps mp3 files. Even without that limitation, it's the weakest recording of the US dates, but it's here for the sake of completism and historical interest.

Sex Pistols, Taliesyn Ballroom, Memphis, Tennessee, USA, 6th January 1978

An average audience recording of the second date on the Pistols' US tour in 1978. A slightly inferior recording of this gig also exists, but that misses off 'No Fun'. This is the complete show.

Sex Pistols, Great South East Music Hall Atlanta, GA, USA, 5th January 1978

The first date played on the short, ill-fated 1978 tour of the USA. The first date was scheduled for 28th December 1977 in Pittsburgh but was cancelled, so the Pistols made their Stateside debut in Atlanta, Georgia. This is a very good, soundboard recording. The last three songs are from Maasbree, Holland in December 1977, which would suggest that the Atlanta show is incomplete.

Sex Pistols, Ivanhoe's Huddersfield, UK, 25th December 1977

This was the original Sex Pistols' final UK date - on Christmas Day - before the short US tour that lead to the band's break up in San Francisco just three weeks later. Sound quality is, at best, average, but there's a certain significance in hearing the last show on British soil until the reformation of the band in 1996. This is the evening show - in the afternoon the band had played a set for the children of local firemen and laid-off workers.

Sex Pistols, Leeds Polytechnic, Leeds, UK, 6th December 1976

One of just a handful of dates on the 'Anarchy in the UK' tour that went ahead, this is a surprisingly listenable recording and, of course, of significant historical value and interest, given the difficulty of actually getting to see the Sex Pistols live at that time. Also included is an interview (in three parts) recorded after the band's show at Middlesborough Rock Garden on 26th August 1977 (this is incorrectly dated in the accompanying text file... August is the correct month for the interview).

Sex Pistols, Links Pavilion, Cromer, UK, 24th December 1977

The original Sex Pistols' penultimate date in the UK, before the ill-fated US tour this isn't the greatest recording (everything's in the mix, but buried beneath a lot of tape hiss), but, like the Doncaster Outlook show (see previous post), historical interest outweighs the sonic deficiencies. There are two versions of this show in circulation - this is the better of the two recordings though it's missing 'Submission' which was played that night and is on the inferior boot.

Sex Pistols, Outlook Club, Doncaster, 24th August 1977

Part of the "SPOTS" (Sex Pistols On Tour Secretly) tour, this is here more for its historical interest than its quality. At best it's an average recording, but mostly fairly poor. You can tell that behind the many generations of tape-to-tape that led to this tape, there's a pretty decent original recording, which sounds like it's from the audience, but everything seems quite balanced behind the tape hiss. It also doesn't sound like the full set - there's an obvious 'cut' during the crowd noise at one point, plus the Pistols were playing more than 11 songs a night at this time.

Siouxsie and the Banshees, Glasgow Apollo, Glasgow, UK, 15th November 1982

FM radio broadcast. I don't know if this was a BBC recording, but it didn't appear on the recent 'Banshees at the BBC' box set. Another tape bought years ago at a record fair - one of those institutions that seems to have been killed off by the internet. I used to love flicking through the boxes of records and tapes, never knowing what I'd find. I often bought tapes from a market stall in Lincoln - they were always graded "quality: A" despite the quality (or lack of) on the tape itself...

The Mighty Lemon Drops, Golders Green Hippodrome, London, UK, 1987

I don't know the date of this show, but it was broadcast on the radio on 16th May 1987, so was almost certainly in early May of that year. The Mighty Lemon Drops looked, for a short time at least, like real contenders but, sadly, their moment in the sun was brief. They did, however, leave behind one of the mid-80s indie-guitar classics in 'Like an Angel' which was later covered by Pop Will Eat Itself.

The Wonder Stuff, Glasgow Tramway, Glasgow, UK, 5th April 1994

Excellent FM radio broadcast. For some unknown reason, this didn't make it onto the Stuffies' 'Live at the BBC' compilation a couple of years back, which is a shame, as it's a great recording from what was their final tour. But here it is for your enjoyment.

The Wonder Stuff, Phoenix Festival, Long Marston, UK, 15th July 1994

The Stuffies' farewell appearance (until the inevitable reunion shows and later full reformation). Only a few songs from this show have ever been released, but this is the full one hour 24 minute FM radio broadcast and, although it's not quite the complete set they played that night, it is a superb record of the Stuffies going out on top. As Miles says before 'Good Night Though': "Ever get the feeling you've been treated?" It certainly felt like that at the time.

I have no idea whether this is the complete show, but it appears to be recorded from the soundboard. I found this on an old CD-R (hence the 128kbps files), so have no further information, but it's truly stunning, as you would expect from Sunderland's finest.

The Wonder Stuff, The Rockerfeller, Oslo, Norway, 4th November 1993

Excellent soundboard recording. I'm assuming it's the 4th of November 1993 - the original has "4.11.93" written on it, but that could always be the arse-about face American way of doing dates with the month before the day... Still a great recording, though. Some of the filenames are wrong in the Zip files as this came on a CD-R and I didn't notice until after I'd uploaded it. The list below is correct, though.

Crazyhead, Reading Festival, Reading, UK, 27th August 1989

A pretty decent audience recording (slightly thin-sounding) of Grebo legends Crazyhead in fine form at the reading Festival. Aside from the first three singles or so, Crazyhead were always a better proposition live. Debut album 'Desert Orchid' was over-produced, lacking the rawness of those early releases. Live shows by the band are thin on the ground so, despite the lack of bottom end on this recording, it's still worth hearing. Best played loud. While drinking snakebite.

Sex Pistols, Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, London, UK, 27th July 2002

Very good quality audience recording. Billed as 'The Pistols at the Palace' and coinciding with the Queen's 50th anniversary of succession to the throne, this show was a faint echo of the legendary 'Silver Jubilee Boat Trip' on the Thames in 1977. It was also alleged to be the Pistols' swansong, which is perhaps why they played everything the original line-up had recorded (note the rare, possibly unique outings for 'My Way' and The Creation's 'Through my Eyes'). Within a couple of months, though the lure of the Dollar had tempted them onto the US late-summer festival circuit, and they've been back on tour every few years since.

The Damned, The Odeon, Birmingham, UK, 17th March 1977

Fairly good quality audience recording, made during The Damned's tour as support to T-Rex. Sound-wise it's not quite up to the standard of the Birmingham Rebecca's show in an earlier posting, but still worth hearing.

From the same night as the Echobelly show posted earlier, Lush topped the bill and were appearing on the back of a magnificent Reading Festival appearance (coming soon...), promoting their album 'Split.'

The Godfathers, Reading Festival, Reading, UK, 26th August 1988

The Godfathers, Reading Festival, Reading, UK, 28th August 1987

Good quality audience recording. I seem to recall the band divided the audience quite a bit - certainly there was a lot of stuff being thrown at them, as you'll gather from the on-stage comments. The last song is a cover of The Beastie Boys' hit.

01 Intro
02 I Want Everything

Loop, Astoria, London, UK, 3rd December 1988

Good quality recording that appears to be from the soundboard. The band were touring the 'Fade Out' LP at the time, but the final song 'Breathe Into Me' would appear on their next (and final) album 'A Gilded Eternity'. 'Mother Sky' is a cover of a song by Can and 'Thief of Fire' was originally by The Pop Group

Sisters of Mercy, York Festival, York, UK, 22nd September 1984

The Sisters of Mercy were third on the bill (beneath Spear of Destiny and headliners Echo and the Bunnymen) at the first (and only) York Festival, held at York Racecourse. Apparently the one-day event wasn't well attended, despite having three of the country's top live draws of the time on the bill. I don't know the exact source of this recording, but I'm tempted to say it's possibly from the soundboard, as the crowd sounds distant, the sound is consistent and there's no audience intrusion or wind noise, etc. If it is soundboard, it's a few generations from the original tape, and the sound is very slightly muffled until 'Alice' which started side two of the cassette, at which point it's all very clear indeed.

01 Burn

Bob Mould, World Cafe, Philadelphia, USA, 28th January 2008

Superb FM radio broadcast of former Husker Du/Sugar frontman Bob Mould performing solo with just an electric guitar, promoting the release of his then-new album 'District Line' which was a return to guitar-based music after a brief dalliance with electronica.

All About Eve, Kentish Town & Country Club, London, UK, 15th September 1991

Excellent, if brief, FM radio broadcast. Apparently, a version of this show with 14 or so tracks exists, and has been re-broadcast on BBC 6Music, but I only have this four-song highlights-of-the-highlights recording which was aired in 1991. If anyone has a recording of the more complete show, please let me know. The final song is a Beatles cover.

The Godfathers, Town & Country Club, London, UK, July 1987

Excellent recording of a BBC In Concert FM radio broadcast. I don't know the date of the performance, though the show was aired on 25th July 1987, so it almost certainly took place in the few weeks prior to the broadcast date.

The Cult, BBC In Concert, Bristol, UK, 2nd June 1984

Stunning quality radio broadcast. There is a version of this doing the rounds which was taken from a vinyl bootleg LP, but this recording is taken from my tape of the original FM broadcast - apart from the last track, 'Spiritwalker' which is taken from the LP-derived recording, as my copy was on a separate tape from the rest of the show, and I can't find it anywhere. Also, the vinyl boot version is of a noticeably lower quality, and doesn't contain track 9, 'Christians.' If the tape with 'Spiritwalker' is ever found, I'll upgrade this. Even if you've already got the LP-sourced version, this recording of the show considerably better, and well worth downloading.
