The Damned headlined a free all-day gig, promoted by the then Greater London Council in Brixton. Also on the bill that day were New Model Army, Spear of Destiny, The Fall, Benjamin Zephaniah, Strawberry Switchblade and some other acts I can't remember. This was, unknown to anyone there at the time, to be Captain Sensible's last appearance as a full-time member of The Damned for some years. The next time they played live (at Nostell Priory, see earlier post) he was no longer in the band. This remains, though, one of The Damned's landmark appearances. I remember having to drag my mate Wigg through the gates at Brixton tube station as staff tried to close the doors in the face of the crowds leaving the gig. We rode around the Circle Line to keep warm for a couple of hours before getting off at King's Cross to go home and bumping in to the others we'd gone down with and lost leaving Brockwell Park.
