Sex Pistols, Shepherd's Bush Empire, 17th July 1996

Superb recording of the Pistols' second UK date on their 1996 reunion tour. I have no idea as to the source of this, but it sounds too good to be an audience recording. A little bass-heavy, but everything is clear, with no crowd intrusion.

The Damned, Hammersmith Palais, 9th November 1986

The first night of a run of London gigs on the 'Anything' tour. The other dates were at the Hammersmith Odeon (one of these shows coming soon). This is an good recording, but unfortunately was on two CD-Rs, the second of which had deteriorated to the point where the last four songs were unlistenable, so I have left them out. If anyone has a good quality copy of the whole thing, please let me know!

The Damned, Finsbury Park, London, 27th July 1986

The second of the two days of The Damned's '10th Anniversary Tea Party' in North London's Finsbury Park. Not much tea in evidence over the two days, but, much to the crowd's delight, a certain Captain Sensible put in an appearance for the encores (Smash it Up, Love Song and Looking At You) on this evening. You can hear the difference in energy between the slightly pedestrian main set and the songs the Captain plays on. I remember being a little disappointed at the time that the set relied so heavily on covers and new songs, rather than celebrating ten years of The Damned. See what you think.

This is the full set, played as support to Rob Zombie. The sound is excellent, though I don't know the source - perhaps a webcast. It's certainly not an audience recording and is well worth downloading.

Spear of Destiny, Crystal Palace Bowl, London, UK, 24th August 1985

This open-air Spear of Destiny show took place at the Crystal Palace Bowl in London, UK as part of a one-day 'Anti-Heroin' festival, nominally headlined, bizarrely, by 'Forces Sweetheart' Dame Vera Lynn, though, as she came on after last band Hawkwind, most of the crowd were heading for the train station by that point. Also on the bill were Doctor & The Medics (see earlier post), March Violets, Balaam And The Angel, The Enid and the Comsat Angels. There were others, too, but I can't remember them.

Spear of Destiny, Brockwell Park, Brixton, London, UK, 8th August 1984

This was recorded at a free all-day festival organised by and in support of the then Greater London Council, whose leader, Ken Livingstone, appeared on stage at one point to give a speech. Also on the bill were New Model Army, Benjamin Zephaniah, Strawberry Switchblade, The Fall and headliners The Damned. There may well have been a couple of others, too. The crowd was huge and chaotic. You'll hear singer Kirk Brandon asking the audience first to stop throwing cans then, a song later, bottles. It was especially chaotic when The Damned were playing. If you've not heard The Damned's set that day, download it from my earlier post - it's reckoned to be one of the best gigs they ever played. I certainly thought so.

This is a good recording, particularly the second half of the set, when the taper appears to have moved to somewhere with a clearer sound, though it all sounds good, really. Enjoy!

Sex Pistols, Phoenix Festival, Long Marston, UK, 21.7.1996

This was the final UK date of the Sex Pistols' 1996 reunion, before the band embarked on a world tour. By rights the reunion, nearly 20 years on, shouldn't have worked, but it did - spectacularly. This is an incendiary show, better than the earlier Finsbury Park gig, and, being from either a radio or TV broadcast has very good sound.

The Stranglers, Birmingham Odeon, Birmingham, UK, 23rd February 1985

This was recorded on the second of two consecutive nights at the Birmingham Odeon during the Aural Sculpture tour. The set-list was identical on both nights apart from the last song (I think they played The Raven on the first night). It's a very good quality recording with very little intrusion from the crowd during the songs apart from the occasional voice and some hand-claps. The taper obviously flipped the tape near the end of Golden Brown, which stops suddenly. I haven't faded it out as I thought it was better to hear everything that was on the tape. I think you'll like this one.

The Damned, Brockwell Park, Brixton, London, 4th August, 1984

The Damned headlined a free all-day gig, promoted by the then Greater London Council in Brixton. Also on the bill that day were New Model Army, Spear of Destiny, The Fall, Benjamin Zephaniah, Strawberry Switchblade and some other acts I can't remember. This was, unknown to anyone there at the time, to be Captain Sensible's last appearance as a full-time member of The Damned for some years. The next time they played live (at Nostell Priory, see earlier post) he was no longer in the band. This remains, though, one of The Damned's landmark appearances. I remember having to drag my mate Wigg through the gates at Brixton tube station as staff tried to close the doors in the face of the crowds leaving the gig. We rode around the Circle Line to keep warm for a couple of hours before getting off at King's Cross to go home and bumping in to the others we'd gone down with and lost leaving Brockwell Park.

The Damned, Brixton Academy, London, 20.12.1987

Part of a short Christmas tour, and an unusual set-list including covers of The Doors' 'Riders on the Storm' and MC5's 'Tonight'. I don't know if opening song '(She's a) Monster' is a Damned original or a cover - the same goes for 'Tear This Slaughterhouse Down'. The Damned, Leeds Queens Hall, Leeds, UK, 30th December 1983

The Damned played a number of Christmas/New Year dates in 1983, including this appearance, headlining a punk all-dayer which also feature, among others, UK Subs, Angelic Upstarts, GBH, The Partizans and Screaming Lord Sutch (who joined The Damned onstage for the encores). The sound on this isn't the best (Leeds Queens Hall is a former bus station, so the acoustics are dreadful) but it's OK, and is a very lively performance. Sadly, the taper didn't record the interlude while Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies clowned around onstage while the guitars were off being re-tuned mid-set, though the recorder was turned back on as they started to play 'Happy Talk'. The last track is mis-labelled as 'Good Goll Miss Molly' on the mp3 file, by the way.

The Damned, Nostell Priory, Wakefield, Yorkshire, UK, 24th August 1984

This was The Damned's first show following the departure, earlier that month, of Captain Sensible. During the show, someone in the audience can be heard shouting out "Where's Sensible?" The answer, from the stage, is "Sensible's ill." Roman Jugg took over guitar duties at this show, and keyboards were played by Steve McGuire of Doctor and the Medics, who were also on the bill that day. At the end of 'Thanks for the Night' Dave Vanian says "you've given us a reason to carry on tonight." How close were The Damned to calling it a day? Thankfully, they didn't.

Doctor and the Medics, Crystal Palace Bowl, London, UK, 24th August 1985

This Medics gig took place at the open-air Crystal Palace Bowl in London, UK as part of a one-day 'Anti-Heroin' festival, nominally headlined, bizarrely, by 'Forces Sweetheart' Dame Vera Lynn, though, as she came on after last band Hawkwind, most of the crowd were heading for the train station by that point. Also on the bill were, Spear of Destiny, March Violets and the Comsat Angels. There were probably others, but I can't remember them. Enjoy!
